Valley of a Thousand Hills
This drive takes you through the scenic hill country west of Durban, dotted with traditional Zulu homesteads. Take the N3 out of Durban in the direction of Pietermaritzburg, then the M13 towards Pinetown and Kloof. Just after Kloof take the turn-off on to the R103 in the direction of Hillcrest. You are now on a stretch of the Old Main Road from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. Continue on to Botha's Hill. At Botha's Hill there are excellent views over the Valley of a Thousand Hills. You can also visit Phezulu Safari Park, a re-creation of a Zulu village, with traditional Zulu dancing and a craft centre. Continue on the R103 for 5km and turn right to the Rob Roy Hotel. Have lunch or tea at the hotel, a strange European fantasy in the middle of rural KwaZulu-Natal. Outstanding viewpoints can be found at the hotel and about 700m past it on the same road. Return to the R103 and drive to Drummond. There are wonderful vistas of the Valley of a Thousand Hills from the town and from around it. As you drive the R103 spare a thought for the athletes who run this way each year in the Comrades Marathon between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. The R103 winds on through Inchanga and Cato Ridge. At Camperdown turn on to the N3 and return to Durban on the highway. This route takes you through attractive low hills and grassland back into the city.
